I recently had my yearly assessment to prove to the state that I’m still very much disabled and I still very much need caregivers. A topic that came up again and again was the idea of independence. What does independence look like for me, someone who is physically dependent on the help from others? What are the steps I want to take to become more independent? Etc, etc.

In answering these questions, I started thinking about how our idea of independence can shift as we age and navigate adulthood with SMA.

What does independence look like for you today vs. in the past? How do you define success on your own terms?
