Parent Columnist Writes About His Daughter’s Singing Ability

This is an encouraging post for parents everywhere, as well as those of us with SMA. I know that for me, doing extracurriculars like school plays and clubs were some of my favorite parts of school. I know I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I hadn’t taken advantage of these opportunities when I was younger.
Likewise, I encourage parents out there to let your kids be active and explore their passions. SMA might prevent us from doing a lot of physical activities, but it doesn’t prevent us from doing a lot of other things. I’m really happy that Ella found her love for singing.

It’s really cool that Ella can sing well despite SMA. I’ve mentioned it before, but chess was always an extracurricular activity I loved, because it’s strictly mental. It’s always been the one activity in which I felt like I was on equal ground as everyone else.

I was in church choir when I was Ella’s age, and loved it! It isn’t something I continued with when I got older, but I really enjoyed and made some great memories.
