Exploring SMA and Relationships

In this PBS Newshour video, psychologist Danielle Sheypuk challenges the concept of disability, in particular, that if you’re disabled you can’t possibly be sexy.

Learn about Jimmy’s story of life and love with SMA.

Sheypuk has type 2 spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) but doesn’t let that stand in the way of her sexuality. She is a clinical psychologist and also the winner of the Miss Wheelchair New York beauty pageant. As a spokeswoman for people with disabilities, she embraces the need for all people to have relationships and intimacy. Danielle talks about her dating life, the fact that she’s on Tinder, and some of the awkward questions she has to handle about her sexual abilities in an attempt to break down the preconceived ideas about people in wheelchairs.

Meet an SMA couple that’s ready and wants to start a family.
