I received my first Moderna shot about 3 weeks ago.  I am scheduled for the booster on the 22nd. My arm was sore for about a day after the shot if I bumped it. I did not have any other side effects.

I love sports. I never played organized adaptive sports. I did go to see para hockey aka sledge hockey at the 2010 Winter Para Olympics and it was awesome. When I was still using crutches and long leg braces I did cross country ski once by using my crutches as ski poles. It was fun. I also used to skate board by sitting on the board and propelling myself with my hands. I love kite flying and made adaptations to my reels so that I can still control the line.  We don’t have many formal organized adaptive sports options in town but prior to covid there were many option just over the border in BC. I’d love to try adaptive curling when the border reopens but finding the time to do so might be difficult.

I believe it is more difficult for disabled people to establish and maintain romantic relationships. One reason is that most people don’t view us as sexual beings. Media has a large effect on our perceptions of sexuality and we are rarely portrayed as sexual beings in media. I have been in a relationship for 21 years. Before that I was in the dating game for about 20 years. Like you I hated dating, especially awkward first dates. I went on many dates. Some were good. Many were horrible. Things rarely lasted more than 2 or 3 dates. I did have a brief friends with benefits fling that was a positive thing for me when I was in my 20’s. I eventually ended up in my current relationship with a woman who I had been friends with for a year and a half before we started dating.

I take 2000 IUs, which is 8 drops from the eye dropper that came with the bottle I that I buy. I suspect any dropper will suffice if your bottle didn’t come with one. You might want to try 4 drops to start.

I use Source Naturals Vitamin D-3 Liquid Drops. They are made and sold in the USA and available  from Amazon.

I recently saw a movie called Tom of Your Life that I highly recommend. It is very charming and quirky indie comedy film. It can be rented on Amazon Prime and on Apple TV.

I have a propane fire pit that I love. It provides a lot of heat and has no smoke. My neighborhood brewery has propane heat lamps in their beer garden and prior to the pandemic I would sit comfortably under one all winter long. I also have heated vest that is powered by usb power bank that enables me to spend more time outdoors in the winter. We are going to be using outdoor heaters, blankets and our projector to have masked socially distant outdoor movie nights this winter.

Other things that should be in your hospital bag are your insurance information and advanced medical directives.

I have traveled to Mexico, Canada, England, The Netherlands and France. Europe had less architectural accessibility than we had back when I went 22 years ago, but the peoples’ attitudes toward disabled people were much more enlightened than what I experienced here. Whenever I encountered a barrier people offered to help before I had a chance to ask.  Nobody made me feel like a burden for needing help. I loved it over there.

When you went to Portugal, did you ever go to the Azores? My mother’s family was from Sao Miguel. I hope to one day go there.

I handle the loss of abilities like I handle the death of loved ones. I mourn. I cry. I adapt and eventually move on. With the passage of time, I usually remember fondly the memories of using my now lost functions although at times there are some pangs of sadness.

DeAnn, I have had the chair for 4 years and will be replacing the motors for the first time later this month. I ordered the new motors last Tuesday. I am really hard on motors and had to replace the motors on my previous chair which was an Invacare Ranger every 2-3 years. During the spring summer and fall it is not unusual for me to put in 20 miles per week of outdoor and off road trail driving on the chair.

I  have never driven a front wheel drive chair. I do prefer rear wheel drive to center wheel drive. I currently have a Quickie S636 and I love it. Perhaps the options you want are available on the S636. It doesn’t hurt to ask.  You can check out the specs here :   https://www.sunrisemedical.com/power-wheelchairs/quickie/rear-wheel-drive/s-6-series

I am originally from Stonington Ct but I lived in Charlestown RI from the age 9 until I moved to the Pacific Northwest when I was 38. I am a URI grad and used to spend a lot of my free time in Providence. Many of the places I frequented like the Cable Car Cinema, Lupos, Stone Soup Coffee House and Club Baby Head are long gone. After last call, I’d often go up to Thayer St. to get a bite to eat. Once in awhile we’d go to Wes’s in Olneyville for ribs and pulled pork after the bars closed. My friends would piggy back me up the stairs so I could eat there. I also used to go to folk music concerts at The Blackstone River Theatre and at Chans in Woonsocket. Most of my family still live in RI and south eastern CT.

I have maintained my caregivers throughout the pandemic but since late February we have had a strict glove and mask policy in our home. My caregivers happen to have medically vulnerable family members living in their own homes so they have been taking the pandemic seriously and refraining from risky behaviors when not working.

In my dream world where money is no object, I would hop on a plane to TF Green and get a ride to Aunt Carrie’s for some clam cakes, RI clear broth clam chowder and a hot lobster roll. Maybe wash it down with a Dels while sitting on Salty Brine Beach and then take a ride to the Fantastic Umbrella Factory.
