I personally love fruit smoothies! Bolthouse and Naked sell a variety of very good fruit smoothies and juices. My favorite is strawberry banana. We also have a Smoothie King here, and that is delicious!

I don’t have a payed job, but I have a few volunteer positions at the local center for people with disabilities (Turnstone). My largest role consists mostly of making phone calls and sending a few emails. I check in with my boss in person a few times a month, but otherwise I do almost everything from home. My other roles are not things I can do from home, but are only once a month each, and the people I work with are very understanding if I need to reschedule do to illness, weather, etc.

I’ve been a bridesmaid in a few weddings, but have only been to one party. We just went to dinner at Bandido’s, so it was pretty uneventful but fun. And Ryan, DeAnn is correct. Party planning is the job of the best man or maid of honor.

I rarely wake up before 9:30. Then I spend the rest of the morning doing breathing treatments, showering, range of motion, etc. It’s time consuming and means I’m almost never ready before 11:45, but getting enough sleep is well worth it. Plus, I have never been a morning person.

I definitely used to have a hard time seeing myself as outwardly beautiful. My old PT had a saying on her wall that read “If you are confident, you are beautiful.” I used to repeat that to myself a lot. I can’t really pinpoint when my thinking started to change, but know I can easily say that I am definitely confident, and I am definitely beautiful. Whether or not people agree is their choice, but I know it’s true, so their opinions don’t really matter all that much.

I would say a lot of tattoo shops where I live are not accessible either. I got lucky and the artist I wanted worked in a very accessible a open shop. I’m sure it’s one of the only ones. I hope you are able to figure it out! I know I have loved having a tattoo, and I always encourage it if it’s something you really want.

I always type on my phone or iPad. I haven’t owned a laptop in several years, as they are to hard to type on. Anytime I do, I use the eraser end of a pencil to give me the reach I need. I can type fastest on my phone due to its small size.

I absolutely love this book! Shane’s sense of humor caught me a bit off guard at first, but it didn’t take long to adjust to it. Even though his sense of humor is a bit more inappropriate than mine, I laughed all the way through. I love how is so open and honest about every aspect of his like, and the same time he can put a light and humorous twist on even the worst situations. I think a lot of people would shocked by his honesty and bluntness, but I think it opens up the possibility for some great discussions and better understanding of how we live our lives. Also, after reading the book I very much wanted to train my turtle to be a service turtle.

This makes perfect sense to me! For some reason, people seem to assume that people with disabilities don’t have “lives.”  I’ve run into people in public on multiple occasions who shocked to see me out and about. For some reason, they assumed that I never go anywhere fun. I think the fedex driver that brings my monthly supply shipment is more aware of my social life than some members of my family. He seriously changed his route for the day so that he arrives after I am home for the day. Because I *gasp* go places.

I’ve never really been able to do laundry, but when I was little I was able to fold T-shirts and wash cloths. I also enjoyed dusting all of the surfaces that I could reach with a wet paper towel. As I got older, I figured out that I could prop a swifer against my chair and push it across the kitchen without having to hold on very tight. Hope that helps give people some ideas!

I live with my parents as well. At our house, the master is the only bedroom on the first floor, so that was automatically mine. It has a large closet where I can keep most of the medical equipment so that it doesn’t feel like it’s taking over my room, and on suite bathroom that I don’t know how I ever lived without! My parents usually work during the day on weekdays, and my brother is in high school, so my nurse and I often have the house to ourselves during the day. Even when everyone comes home, I still prefer to spend most of my time in the kitchen or living room. I’m a people person so I like to be where the rest of my family is.

We have bunch of folding ramps that we love! We keep an eight foot and a four foot in the car at all time in case someone forget to tell us we’ll need one or they think the “threshold” is small enough. We also have one more of each at home as well as a five foot for our front porch.

My feet are always cold and fuzzy socks are best friends! I also have leg warmers and knitted boots. The boots are made a gal who makes them specifically for people with SMA. I could see if I can find her name again if you’re interested. They are really comfortable and an extra layer of warmth.

I wonder if there were any disabled actors that auditioned for the part? If not, it would make sense to have an able bodied actor. I’m personally not opposed to able bodied actors playing disabled characters as long as the portrayal seems accurate, and like I said, there weren’t disabled actors who wanted the role.

  • I saw this as well and am hopefully that airlines will be more responsible and careful with chairs now that they are being held accountable for what happens to them! I haven’t flown since I was little for fear of what might happen to my chair.

I loved the part when he would yell football plays while getting shots! I suggested to my nurse that I could do the same when she gives my shots. We both agreed it would be unwise as it would distract her, and since I’m not a football fan, the only thing I could think of was “touchdown!”

I think you make a good point. It’s important to teach children with SMA that while they may need help, they should still try their best and do what they can to contribute and help others.

    https://www.discountramps.com/4-foot-wheelchair-ramps/c/311004/

Our four foot ramps are older versions of the threshold ramps on this site, but we alway got them on eBay. They are usually a lot cheaper there.
